How To Talk To God

Posted by Nicole Gibson on

I’ve spent time with a lot of people who are growing in their relationship with God (aren’t we all), and I’ve started noticing a pattern: many people are uncomfortable having REALLY HONEST conversation with God. Though they know otherwise, they still feel like they have to have things together before they talk to Him about the hard stuff.

The thing is, this is most definitely a hindrance to really knowing God or having close relationship with Him. Why? Because God already knows everything we’re thinking and feeling, so by not talking to Him about it, we really don’t hide anything; we just put up walls and distance between ourselves and God.

Jeremiah 23:24 says, “‘Can a man hide himself in hiding places so I do not see him?’ declares the LORD. ‘Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?’”

Psalm 139:4 says, “Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it all.”

Hebrews 4:13 says, “There is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.”

Now I know that for a lot of people this probably stirs up some measure of anxiety or fear - fear that God won’t accept them anymore if they tell Him the really dark stuff in their hearts and lives or that He’ll condemn them or turn away from them.

But that’s just simply not true of God.

1 John 4:16 says that God IS love.

Romans 8:39 says that “neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus.”

And 1 John 1:9 says that if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us.

So really, the fact that God knows everything about us is actually one of the most freeing things ever. God is never fooled by our pretending, so we can be free to give it up and just be honest with Him. We can talk to God about everything we think and feel and are struggling with and worrying about and doubting and whatever else, because He already knows it all anyway.

So I’d like to challenge us as a community and you as an individual reader to start having utterly honest conversations with God. That stuff you’ve been too scared to tell anyone? Talk to God about it. Those things you’re too afraid to think about or too ashamed of? God already knows them anyway (and still really, really loves you), so go ahead and talk to Him about them and let Him help you through them. You can’t say anything to Him that will change His mind about you, surprise Him, shock Him, or make Him dislike you. Really. Not anything.

Whether you’ve been a Christian for decades but are hesitant to talk to Him about some sins in your life or doubts that you have or the feeling that He’s not acting for your good, or whether you’ve never talked to God in your life and have lived thinking that He’s a maniac or a wrathful tyrant or maybe not even real at all, how about just talking to Him and asking Him about that stuff? I’m telling you, this will change your world.

So this week, why not practice talking to God as if He already knows everything? You can start small if you want. Just try it. You quite literally have nothing to lose.
